Beer cans turn to beer glasses when cut open with the Draft Top opener, so you can enjoy the aromatics - San Antonio Express-News

Be it floating a river, lounging by the lake or any of the countless other outdoor activities Texans love this time of year, one rule stands when it comes to liquid refreshments: glasses bad, cans good.

But that maxim comes at a cost for beer drinkers.

Whether it’s your trusty standby sipper or one of the wide range of craft beers now available in cans, you’re missing out on most of the aromatic experience of that brew when sipping through a tiny hole in the top of the can. Pint glasses are tapered the way they are for a reason: so you can get your nose in there and appreciate all the barley, hops and yeast that gives every beer its distinct olfactory experience.

A new gadget on the market has solved this problem for beer aficionados. I recently received a sample of the Draft Top tool, which cleanly slices the top off of most standard-size cans from the inside, leaving the lip-safe crimped edge intact.

With the significantly wider opening, the can behaves a lot more like a glass, with all of the aromatic elements of the brew able to hit your nose. That clean edge also creates an opportunity to affix your can with a wedge of citrus or other garnish if you’re feeling fancy.

The gizmo takes some getting used to, and you’ll probably make a mess the first few times you use it. But it’s a breeze to use once you get a handle on it.

Draft Top can handle most cans with tops measuring 52 to 57 millimeters, which means your basic beer cans and the slimmer boozy seltzer cans. It won’t cut crowlers, 24-ounce tallboys or very narrow cans of drinks such as Red Bull.

The Draft Top tool costs $24.99 online at drafttop.com.
