Red Slaw Dog at Payne's Soda Fountain one of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama - Alabama NewsCenter

sela.indah.link

History is inherent in Payne’s Soda Fountain in Scottsboro.

The building itself is home to the state’s oldest remaining soda fountain and what once was a drug store is now a sandwich and ice cream shop with a 1950s retro décor.

Owner Lisa Garrett wishes she could rewind time to before COVID-19 when business was normal. Or better yet, fast-forward to when the pandemic is over.

“It’s slowly coming back,” she said. “A lot of people are afraid to come out and eat with each other.”

Red Slaw Dog at Payne’s is one of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama from Alabama NewsCenter on Vimeo.

The business was closed for five months and has since reopened under the occupancy and social distancing guidelines.

That was five months without Payne’s Soda Fountain’s popular Red Slaw Dog. The hot dog with a ketchup-based slaw is an original twist on a classic – much like Payne’s itself. It’s earned a spot on the Alabama Tourism Department’s list of 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama.

Best Soda Makers From Consumer Reports' Tests - ConsumerReports.org

sela.indah.link

We made dozens of bottles of seltzer to evaluate the four soda makers in our tests. We rate each model on how easy it is to use, including when attaching and detaching bottles and using the controls. We use standard 14-ounce CO2 cylinders, which work in any soda maker.

To judge whether a soda maker produces equally fizzy bottles of seltzer, we start by using ice-cold water, which carbonates better, and we install a gauge on the cap to measure the gas pressure inside each bottle. “You can expect that bottles with the same internal gas pressure will produce about the same amount of fizz,” says Bernie Deitrick, the CR senior program leader who tested the soda makers. We also check the maximum gas pressure that each machine can add to water, for people who want a real snootful of scintillation.

In the bottle-cap test, we see how easy it is to release pressure from each brand’s gassed-up bottle without spilling soda everywhere. “When a bottle that’s been highly carbonated sits for a while—or has warmed up or been shaken—some of the gas that’s been pumped into the water enters the space at top of the bottle, so the gas pressure inside rises,” Deitrick says. “If the pressure isn’t released smoothly, the soda can come out fast, and you get a fizzy mess.”

For the icing test, we examine whether the CO2 nozzle ices up—a problem with some designs that can affect the fizz level. When high-pressure CO2 exits the injector, it drops in temperature and can freeze some water on the nozzle. When the injector is blocked, gas can be diverted to the bottle’s side—instead of directly down into the water—so it doesn’t carbonate as well.

So how did the soda makers in our tests do? Read on for ratings and reviews of each one.

Experiment: I tested a viral TikTok theory that all McDonald's cups hold the same amount of liquid - Insider - INSIDER

sela.indah.link
  • A viral TikTok from March appeared to show that three McDonald's drink cup sizes all had the same volume.
  • I set out to test whether or not that was true by measuring the amount of liquid in McDonald's sodas in small, medium, and large sizes.
  • I also did a pour test, transferring liquid from one cup to another to see if they all held the same amount of soda.
  • I found that McDonald's cups do not, in fact, have the same volume.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Over half a year after it was originally posted, an incendiary TikTok from creator @mykah.mykah that appears to show three differently sized McDonald's cups holding the same amount of liquid went viral once again.

In a video captioned "they do be lying to us doe," @mykah.mykah — who appears to be wearing a McDonald's uniform — pours liquid from a small cup into a medium, and then into a large. The catch is that the liquid from the small drink cup appears to fully fill each cup, suggesting that each drink size actually holds the same volume of liquid.

The video, originally posted on March 3, has amassed over 11 million views and approximately 1.6 million likes in the time that it's been live on TikTok. It's not quite clear why the video is receiving renewed attention over eight months since it was uploaded — the Daily Mirror published a story about the video on November 5, and the Daily Star on November 6. Since then, other outlets including Fox Business, USA Today, and The Daily Dot have covered the TikTok, helping to bring it into viral consciousness once again.

The video has one big red flag — @mykah.mykah doesn't show the empty bottom of the cups, meaning that there could potentially be liquid hiding out to boost the volume, a trick that Snopes reported has been used in similar viral videos

I set out to test the premise of the video for myself, making multiple McDonald's runs to confirm whether or not their cups indeed held the same amount of liquid.

First, I measured the volume of the soda contained within each cup

While I wasn't able to get the exact same cups that appear in @mykah.mykah's video, I ordered a small, medium, and large soda from two different McDonald's.

Before doing any pouring, I wanted a baseline of how much liquid was actually in each cup. While my measuring skills weren't perfect — I used a large mason jar and a Pyrex measuring cup — I was able to get a rough estimate of the liquid in each.

The small soda with ice contained just under 13 ounces of liquid (and partially melted ice) and the small soda without ice had about 14 ounces of liquid.

small soda measurements
Left: the liquid contained in a small soda with ice; Right: The liquid contained in a small soda without ice.
Palmer Haasch for Insider

The medium soda with ice contained approximately 18 ounces of liquid (and, once again, partially melted ice) and the medium soda without ice contained approximately 19 ounces of liquid.

medium drink sizes
Left: the liquid contained in a medium soda with ice; Right: The liquid contained in a medium soda without ice.
Palmer Haasch for Insider

The large soda with ice contained slightly under 28 ounces of liquid (and — you guessed it — partially melted ice) and the large soda without ice contained approximately 27 ounces of liquid.

large drink size
Left: the liquid contained in a large soda with ice; Right: The liquid contained in a large soda without ice.
Palmer Haasch for Insider

These measurements weren't precise by any means, but they do give a ballpark estimate of the amount of liquid contained within each soft drink size at McDonald's, and make it clear that the capacity of a large is much bigger than the capacity of a small. Even before doing the pouring test, things weren't looking good for the theory that all of the cups had the same volume.

Pouring the liquid from cup to cup made it clear that the cups had very different volumes

I had to conduct the same test that @mykah.mykah did in the viral TikTok video in order to really prove that all McDonald's cups didn't have the same volume.

McDonald's cups lined up in row
I cleared out a small, medium, and large McDonald's cup so I could pour liquid from each size to the next.
Palmer Haasch for Insider

From that point, all I had to do was pour from cup to cup to see how much the soda contained within the small cup filled up the medium and large ones.

First, I poured from the small to the medium.

Then, I poured from the medium to the large.

Finally, I poured the liquid from the large back into the small.

To really prove things, I poured the liquid from a full large cup into a small

Just to be completely sure, I poured all of the soda contained in a large cup into a small cup with a bowl beneath as insurance. It went just about as well as I expected.

No, McDonald's cups don't all hold the same volume of liquid

Overall, my experiments clearly indicated that the large McDonald's cup does indeed hold more liquid than the small cup and that all three sizes have different capacities. That means that @mykah.mykah's original video from March is just another iteration of a well-done prank, albeit one with unclear implications — I was only charged one dollar for each soda — small, medium, and large — that I ordered at McDonald's.

Both McDonald's and @mykah.mykah did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Baking Soda and Honey Homemade Remedy That Destroys Even the Most Dangerous Diseases - johnscreekpost.com

sela.indah.link

How Baking Soda/Maple syrup or Honey Homemade Remedy can help you fight cancer?

Cancer cells love sugar – and mixing and heating alkaline bicarbonate of soda (BS) with sugar-rich maple syrup or honey, binds the two together such that the maple syrup targets the “sugar hungry” cancer cells (which consume 15x more glucose than normal cells), and thus “sneakily” also carries the baking soda into the cells, as if inside a proverbial maple syrup “Trojan horse”.

The alkalinity of the baking soda either kills the cancer microbe (or reverts it to its hibernation form) inside the cancer cell, such that the cell reverts to normal.  Or, it has an alkalizing effect forcing a rapid pH shift that kills the cell. The shock wave of alkalinity allows more oxygen into the cancer cells than they can tolerate. A cancer cell is reverted or eliminated before the sugar delivery can cause cancer cell growth. Here is the recipe for this amazing homemade remedy.

Ingredients:

  • Baking Soda
  • Honey or Maple Syrup

Directions:

Combine 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda for every 1 tablespoon of Maple syrup or honey. Because there are 3 teaspoons in 1 tablespoon, the ratio used is 1 part baking soda to 3 parts maple syrup or honey. For example, mix 4 tsp. baking soda with 4 tbs. maple syrup or honey. This should be enough for a week. When you mix these 2 ingredients, cook the mixture on low heat for 5-10 minutes. Do not refrigerate this mixture.

Use:

Take 1 tsp. of this mixture 1-3 times per day, for a maximum of 1 to 2 months. Don’t take this mixture too close to mealtimes. During this, consider changing your diet. It is optimal to decrease the meat intake, and avoid sugar or white flour.

TikTok outraged with teen's McDonald’s soda experiment: 'Why did this even [go] viral?' - Yahoo Lifestyle

sela.indah.link

A TikTok from 17-year-old Mikah Neufeld has started picking up traction, thanks to the teen’s accusation that all McDonald’s drink cups hold the same amount of liquid.

In the video, Neufeld, who is wearing a hat and a headset (although it’s unclear whether he actually works at the fast food franchise), pours Coke from a small soda cup into a medium-sized one, and then finally a large one. The soda appears to reach the same point in all three cups.

“They do be lying to us,” Neufeld captioned his TikTok, which racked up almost 12 million views.

If you have trouble believing this or feel scandalized that you were paying a couple of cents extra for a larger Sprite from McDonald’s, you’re not alone. Most of the people in the comments felt the same way.

A lot of viewers accused Neufeld of filling the latter two cups with soda before starting the video, telling him to pour the same soda amount in the opposite direction to further prove his accusation.

Neufeld responded to the slew of comments with several clown emojis.

But another user replied: “I worked at McDonald’s and this is true, always say no ice or ice on the side (in another cup) and only order smalls, NEVER mediums.”

“It’s kinda true,” another commenter chimed in. “I work there too and ice takes a LOT of place in the cup.”

If you’ve gotten to this point of the article and wondered why you’re reading this, or how this TikTok became so viral, you’re in the same. boat as Neufeld.

“Why did this even get viral,” someone asked.

“Tbh I have no idea,” Neufeld responded.

After further research — a visit to Reddit’s “Is It Bull****” forum — this “experiment” is definitely debunked and people just like playing along with the joke.

“I used to work at McDonald’s,” one Redditor explained. “A large (US) is 32 ounces and a medium is 21. So yes, bull****.”

These eco-friendly gifts are the perfect steps to a sustainable lifestyle:

Fans Are Petitioning to Bring Back This Discontinued Soda From Coca-Cola - Yahoo Lifestyle

sela.indah.link

Coca-Cola made an announcement in July that it would cut about 200 brands by the end of the year. While the company didn't disclose all of the less profitable brands getting the ax in 2021, the company did shed light on a few that will no longer be found on grocery store shelves. One brand, in particular, has accumulated quite the fanbase in Virginia and people are actively petitioning to get it back.

The soda is called Nothern Neck Ginger Ale, aptly named after Virginia's Northern Neck, which extends between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers. Northern Neck Ginger Ale debuted in Montross, Virginia in 1926 and Coca-Cola acquired the brand in 2001. However, in mid-October, Coca-Cola said it would officially discontinue the 94-year-old brand, as well as other regional offerings including Delaware Punch—a grape-flavored soft drink. (Related: 8 Grocery Items That May Soon Be in Short Supply.)

Since the news dropped, at least three change.org petitions have been made begging Coca-Cola to reconsider or at least sell the ginger ale formula to another company. Even Virginia Governor, Ralph Northam chimed in on Twitter and expressed his disapproval of completely discontinuing the product.

Business Insider reached out to Coca-Cola spokesperson Kate Hartman, who confirmed that the company did hear from Northam, and also revealed that Coke would not be able to revive the beverage.

"We know there is a great affinity for the product locally, and we are deeply grateful to the thousands of Virginians who have been loyal consumers since 1926. With this loyalty in mind, I want to assure you that we did not make this decision lightly" she wrote to the outlet.

Cook's SAFE Act bolsters school funding in soda ash-producing communities - Ripon Advance

sela.indah.link

U.S. Rep. Paul Cook (R-CA) on Nov. 5 proposed legislation to require that royalties derived from the production of sodium compounds and related products be disbursed both to the state in which production occurred and to the U.S. Department of Education for educational grants.

While a recent reduction in royalty rates on soda ash by the federal government has helped U.S. producers remain competitive in foreign markets and protect mining jobs, a portion of these royalties also provides funding for local schools and road maintenance in communities where soda ash is produced, leaving impacted schools facing uncertainty about future funding, according to information provided by Rep. Cook’s office.

In turn, Rep. Cook sponsored the Soda Ash Funding for Education (SAFE) Act, H.R. 8728, which would redirect federal funds to establish a Soda Ash Education Equalization Fund to provide grants to local schools that could be impacted by these changes.

“While it’s important to keep the industry competitive, it’s also critical to ensure that our schools are getting the funding they need,” Rep. Cook said. “This bill will prevent unnecessary education funding cuts in communities like Trona, while also providing the school board with the stability they need to make sound budget decisions in the years to come.”

H.R. 8728 — which garnered support from the Trona (Calif.) Joint Unified School District and Trona-based soda ash manufacturer Searles Valley Minerals — has been referred for consideration to the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee and the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee.

Santa drives a Coke truck, not a sleigh, in soda's big-budget global Christmas ad - AdAge.com

sela.indah.link

While the company has been more selective with its marketing this year, the holiday campaign shows that it wants to continue to own Christmas, which it has been advertising around for 100 years. Pepsi—which has not done much holiday marketing over the years—made a move last year to grab some of Coke’s Christmas turf with a campaign starring Cardi B.

Pepsi has not yet foreshadowed if it will engage again this year. But Coke is going all-in. Globally, the campaign includes Santa imagery on packaging and out-of-home buys. In the U.S., the brand will swap in polar bears for Santa Claus on packaging and in outdoor media.

The TV ad will get “marquis media slots throughout the holiday season” in the U.S., according to a spokeswoman, including during National Football League games, which are the most expensive buys on TV.

Th ad shows a father leaving for work (on a coastal wind farm) as his daughter hands him a letter to mail to Santa. While at work he realizes he forgot to mail the letter, setting him off on a mission that takes him through seas, cliffs, jungles and tundras before he gets to the North Pole. It appears Santa has already left, until he shows up driving a Coke truck decorated for the holidays—and he eventually gives the dad the letter back, which reads, “Please bring daddy home for Christmas.”

Solarcan Colours: A Trio of Soda Can Cameras for Tinted Solargraphs - PetaPixel

sela.indah.link

Three years after launching the original Solarcan, photographer Sam Cornwell has just unveiled Solarcan Colours. It’s a trio of new cameras that each captures solargraphs in a different tint.

The Solarcan is a unique camera shaped like a can of soda that allows anyone to easily capture ultra-long-exposure photos showing the path of the Sun over a span of days, weeks, months, or even years. The camera has been used to shoot everything from solargraphy timelapses to solargraphs from Antarctica.

The new Solarcan Colours cameras build upon the success of the original bring new looks to the game.

“We’ve redesigned the look of Solarcan for a more colorful appearance and made some adjustments inside, with each one producing a different result,” Cornwell says.

Here are the three new cameras and examples of the looks they create (in 6-month exposures):

Atlantis: Produces a cool blue finish.

Eldorado: A warm, golden appearance with solarised halos.

Nebula: A striking, duotone picture of the Sun and landscape.

Inside each can is a sheet of 5×7-inch photographic paper. Once you pull away the black tab, exposure through the pinhole lens begins. Due to the machine-sealed nature of the camera, only light passes through the opening — water is kept out.

When you’re done exposing your photo, perhaps months or years later, you simply remove the photographic paper inside to reveal the negative image on it. Finally, digitize it however you’d like (i.e. by taking a picture or by scanning it) and then invert the digital negative to see your final photo.

Cornwell is launching Solarcan Colours through a Kickstarter campaign, where a contribution of £39 (~$52) will earn you the trio of new cameras when they’re released.

If the company delivers on its promises, backers will receive their new cameras in January 2021.

Blue state Rhode Island votes red ... for soda - The Boston Globe

sela.indah.link

NORTH PROVIDENCE — Well, at least the local soda pop election had a clear winner.

This year, the family-run Yacht Club Bottling Works presented its limited-run candidates for 2020: Donald’s Big League Punch, Joe’s Berry-Blue Lemonade, or for independents, and the independent Berrymelon Rebellion. Customers could “vote” by purchasing their favorite flavors.

And, more than 40,000 soda sales later, the decision was a “landslide."

People went for President Donald J. Trump’s punch over Democrat Joe Biden’s lemonade, 54 percent to 33 percent, with another 11 percent holding out for Rebellion.

Why the Trump punch? Yacht Club owner John Sgambato said he couldn’t explain the highly unofficial results. He personally preferred the “cool notes” of the blue Biden lemonade.

Maybe it’s that North Providence is on the edge of Rhode Island’s “Trump Country,” the middle and western part of the state that went for Trump in 2016 and 2020.

Yacht Club also ships to distributors in California and the Midwest, where the election soda pop was a hit and the Trump punch in particular was in big demand.

Is it the flavor, with sunny, tropical notes? Is it that a blue state likes red soda? Is it just that people wanted some memorabilia of a strange time in America?

“No one’s ever going to forget it,” Sgambato said. “Maybe they just want to have that piece of history. He’s not the average candidate for president, or as president.”

Sgambato came up with the idea for a political soda poll while watching the 2016 presidential debates between Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton. “Trump was so loud and boisterous, and I thought people will go crazy for it. And, everyone knows Hillary,” Sgambato said. “We wanted to have fun with it and not be political. That was our goal, because nothing has been easy between the two sides."

“You can cover up the label if you just like the flavor,” he added.

The company reached out to Rhode Island artist Frankie Galasso to design the labels, and then launched the political sodas at their company store, local stores, restaurants, and farmers markets, and with their distributors. The 2016 poll was close between Trump’s Populists Punch and Hillary’s Liberal Limeade, but ultimately Trump won with 46.3 percent of the vote.

Presidential candidates come and go, but rebellion is part of the American culture. Sgambato said the company will probably continue making the Rebellion soda, with its homage to the Rhode Islanders who burned the schooner HMS Gaspee in 1772 leading up to the American Revolution.

Yacht Club will sell the rest all of the political soda it has on hand, and then will continue to make the soda that corresponds to the winner of the actual election through Inauguration Day 2021.

“That’s our tradition — to celebrate who won,” Sgambato said.

Whenever we know who that may be.

Biden says he's on course to win US election as Trump threatens to fight outcome

Democrat said ‘it’s clear that we’re winning enough states’ while president seeks to fire up supporters for bitter legal battle * US election live – follow all the latest updatesJoe Biden has claimed he is on course to win the US presidential election and issued a plea for national unity, even as Donald Trump threatens to fight the outcome in court. The former vice-president flipped the crucial battleground states of Michigan and Wisconsin on Wednesday, giving him 264 electoral college votes to Trump’s 214. The target is 270 to secure the White House.“After a long night of counting, it’s clear that we’re winning enough states to reach 270 electoral votes need to win the presidency,” Biden said in Wilmington, Delaware. “I’m not here to declare that we’ve won but I am here to report that, when the count is finished, we believe we will be the winners.”Biden praised a historic turnout of about 150 million and noted that he was set to win Wisconsin by 20,000 votes, similar to the president’s margin in 2016, and leading in Michigan by more than 35,000 votes and growing – substantially more than Trump managed four years ago. Both states have been called for Biden. As Trump seeks to fire up his supporters for a bitter legal struggle, Biden called for people on both sides “to unite, to heal, to come together as a nation”.With his running mate, Kamala Harris, standing nearby, Biden struck the tone of a president-elect: “I will work as hard for those who didn’t vote for me as I will for those who did vote for me. Now, every vote must be counted. No one’s going to take our democracy away from us. Not now. Not ever.”It was a clear rebuke to Trump’s attempt to sow doubt with claims of fraud and threats to dispute the election all the way to the supreme court, ushering in a potentially prolonged and messy endgame to the election.Late on Wednesday there were signs of desperation as Trump felt his presidency slipping away. He tweeted a thread stating that he was establishing a “claim” on Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina, all of which remain too close to call.“We have claimed, for Electoral Vote purposes, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (which won’t allow legal observers) the State of Georgia, and the State of North Carolina, each one of which has a BIG Trump lead,” he wrote.“Additionally, we hereby claim the State of Michigan if, in fact ... there was a large number of secretly dumped ballots as has been widely reported!”The tweets were met with ridicule since no president can unilaterally declare himself the winner of multiple battleground states with many votes still left to be counted. Almost immediately Twitter flagged the posts with a warning that “official sources may not have called the race when this was tweeted”.Protesters across the US, most aligned with Democratic and progressive causes, turned out on Wednesday to demand that that officials “count every vote”. In New York City, thousands marched past boarded-up luxury stores on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, and in Chicago, protesters marched through downtown and along a street across the river from Trump Tower. After a nerve-jangling election night that resolved little, the picture became clearer on Wednesday as Biden moved closer to 270 electoral votes. Even without the deadlocked state of Pennsylvania, where a million ballots were yet to be counted by Wednesday afternoon. Trump still held leads in Georgia and North Carolina.Unleashing a long-planned legal offensive, the Trump campaign demanded a recount in Wisconsin and called for the count in Michigan to be halted on the grounds that its representatives did not have “meaningful access”.Dozens of Trump supporters there chanted, “Stop the count!” inside the TCF Center in Detroit, where ballots were being handled, while the president tweeted: “Our lawyers have asked for ‘meaningful access’, but what good does that do? The damage has already been done to the integrity of our system, and to the Presidential Election itself. This is what should be discussed!”Elsewhere, about 150 Trump supporters, some of them armed, protested outside the Maricopa county elections department in Phoenix, Arizona, and chanted “Count the votes!” and “Where are the votes?” as officials inside the building worked to tabulate ballots. There were also shouts of “Fox News sucks!” because the network had called Arizona for Biden on Tuesday night with hundreds of thousands of votes not yet counted. Many of the demonstrators wore “Make America great again” hats and waved Trump flags and some were carrying guns. Sheriff’s deputies wearing tactical gear moved inside the office as the crowd continued to grow, according to CBS News.Sheriff’s deputies surrounded the building, and poll workers continuing counts late into the evening had to be escorted out when exiting. The elections department tweeted that its staff “will continue our job, which is to administer elections in the second largest voting jurisdiction in the county. We will release results again tonight as planned.”The Trump campaign also filed a lawsuit seeking to pause the count in Georgia, claiming that a Republican poll observer had witnessed 53 late absentee ballots being illegally added to a stack of on-time absentee ballots in Chatham County. “We will not allow Democrat election officials to steal this election from President Trump with late, illegal ballots,” said Justin Clark, deputy campaign manager and senior counsel.Throughout the day, starting with a television statement after 2am, Trump repeatedly and falsely claimed that the routine counting of ballots after election day was somehow fraudulent. But in practice, Trump campaign officials were supporting continued vote counts where the president was behind and vigorously opposing them where he was ahead. On Wednesday afternoon, Trump staged a rally of his supporters outside a convention centre in Philadelphia where votes were being counted, echoing Republican tactics to stop the count in Florida 2000, which helped win the election for George W Bush. That fiercely contested election was finally decided by the supreme court, and on Wednesday afternoon, the Trump campaign also asked the supreme court to rule on its objections to an extended vote count in Pennsylvania. Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvania’s attorney general, said in a CNN interview the lawsuit was “more a political document than a legal document”.Trump’s attempt to involve the supreme court (Scotus) appeared to be a long shot. Edward Foley, an election law professor at Ohio State University, posted on Twitter: “The valid votes will be counted. SCOTUS would be involved only if there were votes of questionable validity that would make a difference, which might not be the case. The rule of law will determine the official winner of the popular vote in each state. Let the rule of law work.”The Biden camp has assembled its own legal teams at the chief electoral flash points, and launched a “fight fund” to finance the effort. As the legal manoeuvring gathered momentum, it was clear the fate of the US presidency is likely to be determined by a few thousand votes in a handful of states. It was also evident the nation had not delivered the decisive “blue sweep” repudiation of Trumpism that Democrats had hoped for, nor did it look likely the election would give them control of the Senate.Ultimately, the US presidency looked likely to be determined by a few thousand votes in a handful of states, and possibly the decisions of an array of judges.Even before the counting was finished, Biden had won more votes than any president in history – more than 70m – edging out Obama’s 2008 record and about 2.5m ahead of Trump, once again highlighting the disparity between the popular vote and the arithmetic of the US electoral college system. In the scramble for states and their assigned electoral college votes, Biden failed in his bid to win over Florida and Ohio, but looked likely to flip Arizona, another closely contested state that Trump won in 2016. News organizations including the Associated Press and Fox News’s Decision Desk called the state for Trump on Tuesday, but the Trump campaign has argued that call came too soon. Fresh results on Wednesday evening showed Biden’s lead in the state slightly narrowing.Meanwhile, Trump’s lead in Georgia and Pennsylvania has been shrinking as more votes get tallied. Counting in Pennsylvania is expected to continue for a few more days.As had been predicted, Trump appeared on television from the White House early on Wednesday morning and falsely claimed he had won, describing the vote count “a major fraud on our nation”. Speaking after 2am, he announced he would be taking a case to the US supreme court, saying: “We want all voting to stop.” Voting had stopped by that time, and it appeared he meant to say vote-counting.Trump’s own campaign officials, briefing the press on Wednesday morning, expressed support for continued vote-counting in states where the president was behind. And speaking in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani said without evidence: “This is a concerted effort of the crooks that run the Democratic Party. You know these big city machines are crooked.”Neither the vice-president, Mike Pence, nor the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, echoed Trump’s spurious allegation that late-counted votes were inherently fraudulent.“We don’t know who won the presidential race yet,” McConnell said, after winning his own re-election battle in Kentucky. In Pennsylvania, one of the states that could decide the presidency, governor Tom Wolf warned: “There are millions of mail-in ballots that are being counted. And that takes longer than the standard in person voting. So we may not know the results even today, but the most important thing is that we have accurate results.”In the battle for control of the Senate, Democratic hopes of toppling Republicans in Maine, Iowa, South Carolina, Montana and North Carolina fell short and a Senate Democrat in Alabama, Doug Jones, lost to a former football coach, Tommy Tuberville.Democrats gained seats in Colorado and Arizona, but their remaining hopes of a 50-50 Senate rested winning at a runoff contest in Georgia, and pulling off wins in close races in Michigan and North Carolina. One issue that both camps agreed on was that the pollsters had once more got their predictions wrong, in some cases by a wider margin than in 2016, consistently undercounting Trump voters around the country. An election observer mission sent by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe criticised the actions of the president, issuing a statement saying: “Baseless allegations of systematic deficiencies, notably by the incumbent president, including on election night, harm public trust in democratic institutions.”Sam Levin and Maanvi Singh contributed to this report

This "Fact" About Diet Soda Has Just Been Debunked, Study Says - Best Life

If you drink diet soda—or any artificially sweetened beverage, for that matter—chances are you do so because you're under the impression it's a healthier option than its regular counterpart. After all, diet drinks typically don't have any actual sugar, the substance known to cause obesity and a number of other health problems, including heart disease. But, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, artificially sweetened drinks like diet soda are just as likely to lead to heart disease as the sugar-filled regular versions.

For the study, researchers in France looked at data from over 100,000 participants in an ongoing online study that had individuals record their diet, activity level, and health status every six months. From this pool of participants, the research team divided the people into three groups based on their use of diet or sugary beverages: non-users, low-consumers, and high-consumers. Sugary beverages included soft drinks, fruit drinks, and syrups that contained at least five percent sugar, and 100 percent fruit juice. Diet drinks were those that contained artificial sweeteners, like aspartame, or natural sweeteners, such as stevia.

The team then compared each group with the others based on incidences of stroke, heart attack, and other cardiac conditions. Read on for the study's fascinating and controversial findings regarding diet soda and heart disease. And for concerns about another one of your favorite drinks, know that If You Can Smell This, You're Drinking Too Much Caffeine, Study Finds.

According to the study, "higher intakes of sugary drinks and ASB [artificially sweetened beverages] were associated with a higher risk of CVD [cardiovascular disease], suggesting that ASB might not be a healthy substitute for sugary drinks," Healthline reports. And for ways you can take care of your ticker, This Is the Best Thing You Can Do For Your Heart Health Right Now.

The researchers not only confirmed a direct connection between the consumption of sugary beverages and higher incidences of heart disease, but they also found that participants who drank diet sodas and artificially sweetened beverages experienced almost the exact same health risks. The only group found to have a lower risk of heart disease were individuals who drank no sweetened beverages, artificially or otherwise. And for another way you're putting your health at risk, This Is the Worst Thing You're Doing to Your Heart Right Now.

Some industry groups were less than pleased at the study's claims, even refuting the findings publicly. "Contrary to the claims made in this publication, there is actually no evidence that low/no-calorie sweeteners would increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, nor a plausible mechanism by which they could cause heart disease in humans," the International Sweeteners Association (ISA) said in a statement.
