TUCSON (KVOA) - With fewer people dining out because of COVID-19 restrictions, people are drinking more beer and soda at home instead of at bars and restaurants.
Can makers can not quite meet the current demand, which means there may be fewer drinks to go around.
"Being an outlet, of course it's concerning," said Melissa McGary, owner of McGary's Discount Groceries.
McGary said some of the store's discounted sodas are very popular with their customers.
"We're about deep discounted prices," she said. "Of course, if there's a shortage in those types of products, it's going to affect our ability to get it and get it at an affordable price."
The raw material for aluminum can production is not in short supply. It is the capacity to produce the cans that is lacking.
The Aluminum Association, an industry representing the Metal Examiners released this statement about the shortage.
"The aluminum beverage can manufacturing industry has seen unprecedented demand for this environmentally friendly container prior to and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."
Melissa McGary said, "Any time there's a shortage of cans, currency or anything like that, it's a concern. We look far and wide for the product, to give the community discounted prices."
According to the National Beer Wholesalers Association, beer sold in cans has already seen a 20 percent increase in sales in the last decades. However, that was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
