There’s nothing like a crisp glass of white wine on a sunny afternoon.
While our favorite Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc always has a place, there’s some especially worth stocking up on for summer cookouts. This is especially true with National White Wine Day coming up on August 3!
Can every day be White Wine Day?
“I was pretty much a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir disciple – we won’t talk about the Franzia Almond wine-in-a-box college staple – until I put my cast iron on the back burner, took off my toque and picked up a wine glass to study for my sommelier exam,” said chef and sommelier Laura Pauli.
That experience opened up an entirely new world of wine to Pauli and expanded her go-to wines to the more unique and passionate wines. For Pauli, that included “wine made in small amounts by winemakers passionate about their craft rather than the mass produced, formulaic wines.”
Pauli believes if you cook with love, it’s always delicious. Same goes for wine.
Here are a few great wines to add to a home collection this summer.
Oak Farm Vineyards 2019 Albariño
Early August also marks National Albariño Day (celebrated just before White Wine Day, on August 2), and this is a spectacular Albariño, with notes of honeydew melon and lime flower, making it approachable and a beautiful bottle to open on an August day.
2017 Oremus, Mandolas, Dry Furmint, Tokaj, Hungary
Now we’re really on unmapped trails. Tokaji is not unique in and of itself as it is known for being a delicious, unctuous sweet wine that can age for decades, much like a French Sauternes. “This particular Tokaji however, has many mind-blowing attributes,” said Pauli. While made from the same Furmint grape native to Hungary as its sweet sister, this is delicately crisp and dry, with big floral and fruit aromas. Think Meyer lemon, stone fruit, ginger, mandarin orange, honeysuckle and love.
Gota Azahar Vinho Verde 2018
The traditional Vinho Verdes of Portugal are a classic summer hit for their fresh and light body with just a hit of spritz. “I love this one because it’s naturally made, which isn’t always easy to find in this category and it still hits all those great, fun-in-the-sun notes,” said Coly Den Haan, one of LA's first female sommeliers and the owner of Vinovore, a wineshop focused on female-made wines. Easy on the wallet too!
J. Brix Wild Wild Sea Chenin Blanc
“This summer release from J.Brix makes me want to curl my toes in warm sand on a sunny beach after every sip,” said Haan. Indeed, these Chenin Blanc grapes are grown on ancient beach soils giving it this slightly oily and salty character that’s thirst quenching and dry.
JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery 2018 Viognier
Viognier is known for ripe stone fruit and a rich texture with a long finish. This wine is a favorite, even for those who don’t generally lean toward white wines.
HOOT Bagged White Wine
“This naturally made, bagged Greek wine or "Bag-Num" is rich, fun, and adorable like Drew Barrymore skipping through a field full of yellow daisies eating yellow cherries,” said Haan. Amazing for Summer outdoor activities as it’s lightweight, has a nifty pour spout (no wine opener needed) and easy to throw in your favorite tote, plus it’s the equivalent of two bottles, I mean, need I say more?
DAOU Family Estates 2019 Sauvignon Blanc
This Sauvignon Blanc is bright and fun, with aromas of grapefruit and gooseberry, and even a hint of quince. It feels a bit floral, too, with notes of lemongrass and acacia balanced with lychee and wet stone.
2017 Livio Felluga Pinot Grigio
The best Pinot Grigio is one that is crisp and chilled and all-too-drinkable. This one is a bold yellow with rose and copper tones, with notes of orange blossom and daisy on the nose, as well as flavors of apricot and Percoca peach. It’ll be beautiful to sip all afternoon, or with dinner.
2018 Dutcher Crossing Sauvignon Blanc
This Sauvignon Blanc is a light straw color, with notes of honeydew rind, lime zest, white peaches, honeysuckle, key lime pie and a touch of minerality. It’s everything to love in a summer wine: It’s refreshing, with flavors of lemons and limes, and is great to sip by the pool or enjoy with a raw bar or fresh salad.
2019 L'arca Trebbiano D'Abruzzo D.O.C.
Best enjoyed chilled, perhaps with a cheese course or raw oysters, this Italian wine is full of flavor, with notes of citrus and bright aromas.
