6 Oregon wine events to celebrate September - OregonLive

September is a month for transitions. Garden daydreams fade. The weather cools, kids virtually go back to school and vineyards come roaring to life for harvest.

Many of us are also eager to shake off summer’s self-isolation cobwebs to see what the state’s wine regions have to offer. Whether you prefer exploring from your sofa or in the great outdoors, this month’s wine calendar has something for everyone.

Hike, Lunch and Wine Flight at Knudsen Vineyards

This event is aptly named “Pioneering Footsteps.” Attendees will walk through one of Oregon’s oldest vineyards, tracing the late Cal and Julia Lee Knudsen’s footsteps. Their daughter, co-owner and managing partner Page Knudsen Cowles, will lead the hike. Along the way, guests will learn how the vineyard’s soils and microclimate translate to the wine in their glass. Those glasses will be filled during the post-hike box lunch served on the winery’s outdoor patios. Tickets are $55 each and are available for purchase on the winery website.

11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Sept. 12, Knudsen Vineyards, 9419 N.E. Worden Hill Road, Dundee, knudsenvineyards.com or 503-580-1596.

Celebrating Hispanic Roots

Six Hispanic Willamette Valley winemakers and winery owners join forces to share their cultures in a month-long celebration paralleling Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15. The participants in this inaugural event are Ximena Orrego of Atticus Wine, Carla Rodriguez of Beacon Hill Winery, Sofia Torres McKay of Cramoisi Vineyard, Cristina Gonzales of Gonzales Wine Company, Sam Parra of Parra Wine Company and J.P. Valot of Valcan Cellars.

The month kicks off with a pair of virtual panel discussions featuring all six winery participants on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The 4 p.m. seminar will be conducted in English, the 6 p.m. seminar will be in Spanish. Registration for both events is free and open to the public.

Each winery will offer a special wine or wine selection to celebrate the event. 10% of sales will be donated to the Latino Partnership Program of the Oregon Community Foundation. To register for the seminars and learn more about the wines, please visit celebratinghispanicroots.com.

Griffin Creek Virtual Wine Tasting

Griffin Creek is Willamette Valley Vineyards’ separate label for fuller-bodied reds from southern Oregon’s Rogue Valley. Brand ambassador Jose Cruz will be hosting a virtual tasting of Griffin Creek’s cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, malbec and tempranillo on Zoom. Registration for the virtual tasting is free. The four tasting wines are available for purchase from Willamette Valley Vineyards.

5-6 p.m., Sept. 17, Willamette Valley Vineyards, 8800 Enchanted Way S.E., Turner, wvv.com or 503-588-9463.

Spanish Tapas Cooking Class with Natalie’s Estate

Christy Hess and her Cookin’ Class team join forces with Boyd and Cassandra Teegarden of Natalie’s Estate Winery in Newberg to show you how to make a trio of tapas dishes and a dessert. The tapas and snacks will be paired with half-glass samples of Natalie’s Estate wines. Additional glasses and bottles of wine will be available for purchase. Tickets are $85 each.

6-8:30 p.m., Sept. 18, Cookin’ Class, 9265 S.W. Greenburg Road, Tigard, cookinclass.com or 503-455-8101.

Vertical Pinot Noir Tasting at Bryn Mawr Vineyards

The Bryn Mawr Vineyards Estate Pinot Noir vertical flight includes vintages ranging from 2014 to current inventory. The wines will be paired with an array of appetizers prepared by chef Karen Stolberg. Tickets are $50 each.

6-7:30 p.m., Sept. 23, Bryn Mawr Vineyards, 5935 Bethel Heights Road N.W., Salem, brynmawrvineyards.com or 503-581-4286.

Hike and Taste Wine at Winderlea Vineyard & Winery

This is a grand opportunity to trek through scenic Dundee Hills vineyard locations while sipping the beautiful wines of Winderlea. The first stop on this Sunday stroll is the Weber Vineyard gazebo. Then it is on to the home of Winderlea owners Bill Sweat and Donna Morris. At their farm table, you will sample estate wines paired with homemade bread and Briar Rose Creamery cheeses.  The final stop is Winderlea’s Vineyard Garden for a final flight of wines. Tickets are $50 each.

9-11 a.m., Sept. 27, Winderlea Vineyard & Winery, 8905 N.E. Worden Hill Road, Dundee, winderlea.com or 503-554-5900.
