Beer Nut: Cringeworthy beer names - MassLive.com

sela.indah.link

I’ve written about beer names several times before, covering everything from great brew names to trademark lawsuits over names. But today I’m taking a different tack on the subject: Bad beer names (and ones that might discourage you from drinking or trying them).

Before we begin, allow me to offer this caveat: I’m not in any way saying these beers are bad or unworthy of trying. In fact, I have not had most of them so I can’t give an opinion. I’m guessing most if not all of them are good. This column is solely about the names of these beers. And frankly, I don’t really care about a beer’s name as long as it tastes good. But sometimes a name alone will put you off for one reason or another.

Some of these beers were one-offs and thankfully some seemed to have been retired. And one last thing: Some of the beer names I found researching this column were so bad that they simply not suitable to print, so the ones below aren’t even the worst, sadly:

Village Idiot Brewing Co.’s Thong Remover Belgian Tripel Ale – The archaic, sexist and adolescent idea of beer (or alcohol) as a way of getting women to remove their clothing should not be a route that craft brewers should embrace. The craft beer community needs to be inclusive, and this sort of thing isn’t exactly inviting to women.

Ridgeway Brewing’s Reindeer Droppings – I’m a big fan of the Christmas season, and I like a lot of the holiday beers, but this one doesn’t exactly warm me in the same way that holiday lights and the smell of pine trees do.

Klamath Basin Brewing Co.’s Butt Crack Brown – What’s the deal with poop-themed names? Does anyone find them appealing? I know it’s jokey, but we are dealing with something you drink here.

Loose Shoe Brewing. Abbie’s Black Eye P.A. – OK, the “Eye P.A.” is a semi-clever turn on IPA, and a black eye isn’t offensive in its own right. But when it’s a woman (Abbie) with a black eye, this strays into the area of domestic abuse. Loose Shoe seems to have been told to do better and it did, as it looks as though it removed the name “Abbie” from the beer.

Big Sky Brewing’s Moose Drool – I’ve actually had this one and it’s a fine brown ale, and compared with others on this list, the name is only mildly off-putting. But still: yuck.

Duclaw Brewing Co.’s Sweet Baby Jesus – Look, I don’t care what religious beliefs anyone has (or doesn’t have), but since a good segment of society (across the board around the globe) take their spirituality seriously, maybe it’s not a good idea to use a casual phrase with major deity as a beer name. (See also New England Brewing Co.’s Gandhi-Bot IPA which is a fine brew, but … no.)
