Beer Nut: Mustard beer on tap from Oskar Blues Brewery, French’s - MassLive.com

Well, as I said last week, baseball is back.

I mentioned that in order to have fun with a few beers that had baseball-themed names (or ones I felt touched on the subject), but leave it to Oskar Blues Brewery to one-up me with something that even furthers the idea of melding ballparks with brews: French’s Mustard Beer.

That’s right, you read that correctly: mustard beer.

I’m sure plenty of readers have enjoyed beer mustard, which has been around for as long as I can recall, but flipping the equation on its head?

“We’re stoked on bold flavors at Oskar Blues Brewery and we never shy away from a challenge,” Oskar Blues head brewer, Juice Drapeau, said in a press release. “With French’s Mustard Beer we elevated the Classic Yellow Mustard flavor with tangy lemon and lime to create a tropical wheat ale I’d pair with a loaded hot dog on the hottest day of the year.”

The collaboration with one of America’s favorite mustards hit the shelves just in time for National Mustard Day on Aug. 1, and I, for one, will definitely be trying to get my hands on some.

“But George,” you might say, “you usually don’t like outside ingredients added to beer.”

You’d be right about that, but I love mustard so much that this combination seems intriguing at the very least. And mustard isn’t the only extra passenger on this wild ride: The beer is brewed with lemon, line, tangerine, and passionfruit as well.

Now, this certainly could turn out to be an abomination (at least to some readers’ palates) but I also trust that the folks at Oskar Blues know what they’re doing. The brewery has made some amazing beers over the years, and since it is one of the bigger craft breweries, I will allow its success to grant them leeway when it comes to experimentation.

And while I’m more of a Gulden’s fan when it comes to Big Mustard, I’ve enjoyed French’s products as well, although I admit I still haven’t tried the company’s Mustard Ice Cream.

“French’s enjoys creating new curiosity around a flavor that has been a staple in homes for over 115 years,” said Jill Pratt, chief marketing excellence officer for French’s. “The incredible reaction to last year’s release of our Mustard Ice Cream showed us how far people are willing to go to savor this favorite condiment. We promise this French’s Mustard Beer will not disappoint either.”

We shall see.

While we are talking sports, I should mention that Framingham brewery Jack’s Abby is collaborating with basketball team the Boston Celtics on a special brew named Pride and Parquet. The beer is part of a four-year deal between the two parties and will be released in time for the start of next season. The word is that it’s a hoppy lager (which Jack’s Abby excels at) and this partnership seems like a slam dunk.
