Organizers of the Harvard Milk Days festival announced Friday that they have a new plan to entertain the community for a night this year despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event was postponed from its originally scheduled start in April because of the outbreak, and organizers hoped it could be hosted as normal in October.
In light of the ongoing public health orders set by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the governor's office, however, the organizers said they feel hosting a parade, carnival and similar events is not feasible.
The fireworks may still go on, according to the release.
The Harvard Milk Days board of directors still is working to put together a way to safely celebrate with a fireworks show. It is aiming to have a fireworks display starting at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 26, with a backup rain date Sept. 27. Details are being finalized and will be released soon on the Harvard Milk Days Facebook page.
The Milk Days Golf Outing still is scheduled as planned for Sept. 5. Visit milkdays.com or call 815-569-2427 to register a golf foursome.
These events, plus the Queen Contest that already took place, will be the only Harvard Milk Days events to move forward this year.
The board already is working on plans for the 2021 celebration and "returning to a new normal," according to the release. Information about next year's festivities will be posted on the Facebook page and at milkdays.com.
Anyone interested in helping with event committees can email the organizers at info@milkdays.com.
