FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Allen County's first Donor Milk Express site is now open.
Dupont Hospital and the Milk Bank celebrated the official opening Tuesday afternoon.
With the Donor Milk Express Program, or DMX, families with newborns can buy human milk, up to 40 ounces, without a prescription.
The program helps mothers who can't produce milk or can't produce enough milk.
One mother, Kelsey Crimmins, who gave birth in June, took advantage of the Milk Bank to make sure she had enough of a supply when she left the hospital.
"With COVID and everything going on, we were planning to go home 24 hours after delivery, and so we needed something to bridge that gap between the hospital and home. So we decided to take advantage of the Donor Milk Express Program, and we purchased milk for her so we could have her breastfeeding exclusively from home," says Crimmins.
The Milk Bank receives human milk from screened donors, then pasteurizes and freezes it before distributing the milk.
