The Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) and the State Monitoring Cell of Gujarat Police in a joint operation seized 4,942 bottles of cough syrup which had Codeine Phosphate as an active ingredient but we’re being sold on the black market.
Valued at Rs 5.72 lakh, the three brands of cough syrup were found at a godown and a residential apartment in Bavla. They are classified as Schedule-H drugs which cannot be sold without a prescription.
However, the misuse of Codeine-infused cough syrups as cheap narcotics substitutes is welldocumented. FDCA received credible intelligence that a medical store owner whose licence had been cancelled for the very same reason, was illegally stockpiling and selling such cough syrups without licence.FDCA Commissioner Dr Hemant Koshia said they wrote to the Home Department and raided a godown behind Bavla APMC, finding huge stocks of the syrup. According to a statement from the State Monitoring Cell, Kiransinh Jitendrasinh Chauhan was located and he led them to the godown in Bavla. They seized 1,169 bottles of Raxogent-t and APDYL-T syrups worth Rs1.28 lakh.
After Chauhan’s interrogation, they located Mihir Sureshchandra Patel of Bavla, a former medical store owner whose licence was earlier cancelled by FDCA for illegal sale of Codeineinfused cough syrups. Officials found and seized 3,773 bottles of APDYL-T and Lykarex cough syrup worth Rs 4.44 lakh.
Both men were booked under the NDPS Act. They were also booked for illegal stockpiling and sale of a Schedule H drug.
