Beer Review: Around the Bend – Oktoberfiesta - On Tap Sports Net

Alright, first of all, this beer has a fantastic name. That and the artwork on the can are what first grabbed my attention. Next was the description, “a Marzen lager with pasilla chili and epazote.” I’ll be honest, I don’t know what those are but I was figuring it was going to be some blend of Oktoberfest with Mexican spices. Sounds amazing.

This is an amazing looking beer. It pours a bright red-orange with a solid inch or so of head on top. Really A+ on the look alone. Now the bad news. I was very disappointed in the taste. To me, this tastes like any other Oktoberfest, maybe even a little lighter. I decided to look into the specific ingredients. First, epazote is a tea leaf. I think that explains a lot. That could easily be toning down the beer by making it lighter and sweeter. As for pasilla chili, it’s a mild-to-hot rich flavored pepper. I am not getting any kind of heat with this beer, so I am not exactly sure what they were trying to accomplish here.

In the end, I would not say this is a bad beer, but I was hoping for something a bit different. It’s smooth, light, and sweet. Try it if you want and maybe someone else can pick up on these ingredients, but it didn’t do anything for me.

Happy Drinking!
