What better way to count down to the Christmas holiday than with a beer in hand every night?
Whether you prefer a strong, hoppy IPA or a dark, barrel-aged stout, Sioux Falls area breweries are preparing for winter with toasty flavors to prepare you for hibernation or bring about cheer with sweet and fruity holiday flavors.
One local brewery, Obscure Brewing Company, packaged its own Beer Advent Calendar at the end of November, and the 80 packages sold out within two days, said owner Don Choate.
If you didn't snag one for yourself, don't worry. Here are the 25 local drinks you'll need to create a beer advent calendar of your own:
Winter-warmers
Santa Paws, 6.1% ABV, Miner Brewing: Even if you don't like winter-warmers, how could you not buy this for the name alone? This year's winter-warmer release from Miner Brewing is a lighter take on an English-style winter-warmer ale with hints of cocoa, caramel and dried figs. Available in crowlers and growler fills.
Imperial Brown, 7.5% ABV, WoodGrain Brewing Co.: A solid drink that will warm you to your toes as a classic brown ale with a higher alcohol content and robust body to it. Available in crowlers.
Acronical Porter, 6.5% ABV, Obscure Brewing Co.: Notes of chocolate and roasted coffee round out this winter-warmer style of beer. Available in crowlers starting Thanksgiving week.
Darkness of Adulthood, 6.2% ABV, Look's Beer Co.: While not your true winter-warmer, this black IPA is sure to warm you up with its strong, dark malt creating a roasted IPA flavor. Its bitterness also is fitting for the sunshine-less months ahead of us. The beer will be released in late December in four-pack cans.
Sour beers
Blueberry Pie Sour, 5.8% ABV, Fernson Brewing Co.: Haven't eaten enough pie over Thanksgiving? Take a break from the cranberry and apple and take a dip into a fruity blueberry refresher. The sour has vanilla and sugar to contrast the tart blueberry puree used. Available in packaged cans and crowlers.
Raspberry Kickball Sour, 4.1% ABV, Remedy Brewing: This kettle sour has a tart berliner weisse base paired with a raspberry puree for a fruity backbone. The sour beers might not be the most winter-y seasonal drinks, but they pair well with foods this time of year. Available in cans at local liquor stores starting the week of Christmas.
Cranberry cravers
Cranberrery State of Mind, 5.6% ABV, Severance Brewing Co.: Based on an Urban Dictionary description as a "high brought on from enjoying a lot of cranberries," this beer fits the ticket. The drink is a cranberry spruce tip sour, combining flavors to fit the holiday cheer. The drink is available in crowlers now and will be sold in 16 oz cans at stores by mid-December.
Cranberry Gose, 6.3% ABV, WoodGrain Brewing Co.: The brewery is releasing its annual holiday beer just in time for the holiday season. It's a holiday staple with its strong cranberry flavors that fit right along with a Thanksgiving feast. Available starting Nov. 25 in crowlers.
Just My Imagination, 6% ABV, Covert Artisan Ales: It took three days to cook down 140 pounds of cranberry into a spiced sauce added to the fruited sour ale. "It smells and tastes like the holiday," said Stacey Berry, co-owner of Covert. Available in crowlers.
Hops lovers
Stratacopter, 6.5% ABV, Remedy Brewing: The New England-style hazy features strata hops and Michigan copper hops bought locally. The beer fits a traditional New England hazy with a twist. Available in cans at local liquor stores starting the week of Christmas.
Vegas, 10.5% ABV, Covert Artisan Ales: A dark wild ale — with wild yeast harvested from a pine cone in Falls Park — is aged in a Tawny Port barrel for two years, giving hard notes from the wild but also a sweetness from the port and vanilla notes from the barrel. Vegas, named after Covert owners' dog, will be released in bottles sometime in December.
Secret Double Cross, 6.5% ABV, Severance Brewing Co.: The IPA has a lager yeast to it, giving it a clean and crisp taste like a lager but a hoppy bitterness in an IPA. The hops also provide a hint of fruit and pine. The drink is available in 16 oz cans at stores and taproom crawlers.
Barrel-aged beers
Pay Dirt, 10.1% ABV, Miner Brewing: The bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout paying tribute to its brewery's mining and Black Hills roots is the perfect fireside sipping beer during the holidays. It was aged for one year and incorporates cocoa and coffee, adding sweetness from the malt. Available in crowlers and growlers.
Peanut Butter Werewolf, 11.3% ABV, WoodGrain: In a collaboration with the Treasury and the Carpenter Bar, this imperial stout was aged in an Old Forester Bourbon barrel for three months and flavored with peanut butter and chocolate nibs for a tasty treat. The drink will be available in bottles and on tap starting Dec. 23, along with two other barrel-aged bottles released that day: the popular Yuge, 12.9% ABV, aged imperial porter in a maple syrup barrel and the new Double Barrel Cocobolo, 14.7% ABV, a spiced imperial milk stout.
Databank Nov. 15: Minnehaha County property transfers
Enhanced Shadow Particles, 10.8% ABV, Obscure Brewing Co.: The barrel-aged stout is dark as the name suggests. The beer was aged for over a year in a Jack Daniels barrel, absorbing the taste and aroma of the whisky. Twilight, a Porter with 7% ABV, was also aged in the Jack Daniels barrels.
BA Eastern Sea, 10.5% ABV, Lupulin Brewing Co.: This Rye-Whiskey barrel-aged porter is fermented with lager-like yeast, leaving it with a clean and light finish. Malty notes of roast coffee, chocolate and caramel dance along the drink, along with hints of plum as it warms. Notes of oak, vanilla and spice also contribute from the barrel. Lupulin is also releasing its Coconut Vanilla Demigod, 15.5% ABV, and BA Polarnattens Paradis, 12.75% ABV, on Black Friday in bottles.
For the non-beer drinkers
Flanders Red, 5.5% ABV, Homestead Brew: The Flander's red ale, a sour and red wine-like Belgian-style ale, was aged in red wine bottles for 15 months on pears, creating a strong flavor after soured. Available in bottles at local liquor and grocery stores.
St. Christopher Series (unnamed #1), 11.5% ABV, Covert Artisan Ales: The drink was fermented dry with chai spices, and then re-fermented in rum barrels with cherries for about a year. Tannic, dry flavors reminiscent of wines will appeal to typical wine drinkers. Available in bottles and release planned for sometime in December.
St. Christopher Series (unnamed #2), 10.5% ABV, Covert Artisan Ales: Adding candied sugar and 50 pounds of blueberries to a bourbon barrel and letting it ferment turned the drink almost into a mead, owners say. It aged for a year and a half. Available in bottles and release planned for sometime in December.
Cranberry Ginger Cider, 6.4% ABV, Miner Brewing: It might not be a beer, but this cider is perfect for the season with its holiday flavors of tart cranberries mixed with ginger spice and apple sweetness. Available in crowlers and filled growlers.
Novelty beers
Twin Bing Stout, 8.8% ABV, Fernson Brewing Co.: Last year's release of Fernson's Twin Bing Stout sold out in a day, so if you want in on this year's release you better be prepared. The downtown Sioux Falls brewery will release cans of the stout with the Midwest candy's signature chocolate and cherry flavors the first week of December, notifying customers about the sale through its newsletter.
Fluffhead, 5% ABV, Homestead Brew: This brew is a sour combining cotton candy, lemon warheads and edible glitter. While not following with traditional winter flavors, the drink fits just fine with the holiday theme since it "looks like a snow globe when you're drinking it," said owner Lee Anderson. Available in cans at grocery and liquor stores.
For the sweet tooth:
Imperial S'mores Stout, 12.6% ABV, collaboration between Remedy Brewing Co. and WoodGrain Brewing: While the alcohol percentage is just over 12%, the thick and sweet stout hides it well. It's made with graham crackers and marshmallows, and it'll be available starting Nov. 29 at Remedy, followed shortly after by WoodGrain. Available in crowlers.
Seed Series 89, 9.2% ABV, Fernson Brewing Co.: A German chocolate cake stout, minus the nuts, gives off coconut, chocolate and hints of vanilla in this limited release. Available in crowlers.
Peach Pie Milkshake IPA, 7.7%, WoodGrain Brewing Co.: 330 pounds of peach puree, combined with cinnamon, graham cracker crumbs and vanilla beans creates a tasty next staple in WoodGrain's milkshake series. The drink is scheduled to be released in early December and available in crowlers.
