When it comes to igniting passion and sexual pleasure, no alcoholic beverage has more benefits than a glass of red wine. In fact, studies have shown that to be true for both males and females. For women, red wine enhances the sex drive more so than other drinks, at least that is the finding of a group of Italian researchers who discovered that the compounds in the wine actually enhance levels of sexual desire. What this study has uncovered is that red wine increases blood flow to a females erogenous areas, which in turn leads to increased levels of desire. The down side is that too much alcohol can have the opposite effect, resulting in a less pleasure.
For men, a drink or two not only helps them to relax it can also increase blood flow to essential areas. In addition to that, red wine also seems to increase levels of testosterone in the blood, a necessary hormone when it comes to male sexual arousal and appetite. As it turns out a male’s body rids itself of testosterone when an enzyme called UGT2B17 attaches specific molecules to testosterone, enabling the body to identify it and get rid of it through the urine. But when consuming a glass of red wine, a compound inside the wine called quercetin supposedly prevents this from happening, thereby raising levels of testosterone in the blood. However, just as with women, too much alcohol, including red wine, can have the reverse effect, lowering testosterone and decreasing sex drive.
Now before you make a mad dash to your local wine shop and purchase a case of red wine, let me remind you that as the study has indicated, over indulging can ruin a good thing. Too much wine and your partner will probably ask “has the train left the station”?
I know this may sound like a cliche but romantic background music, good food and a bottle of red wine can ignite a renewed passion in almost anybody. Now some will argue that it’s all a state of mind. Try explaining that to your raging hormones. Red wine in moderation can be the catalyst that helps to reignite desire. Look at it this way, it’s far better that popping Viagra and it tastes better, too.
