Even if you’ve waited until the last minute to buy Thanksgiving wine at a grocery store, you’ll most likely find plenty of inexpensive, good quality whites and reds that will go with turkey and many of the side dishes. For this holiday, I like fruity, medium-bodied U.S. wines that come from specific American Viticultural Areas within a state. The following pinot noir and chardonnay wines are fine examples.
Cambria Estate Winery 2018 Katherine’s Vineyard Chardonnay, Santa Maria Valley, California
Bought • Dierbergs, 7233 Watson Road, in November for $14.47
Description • This delicious and elegant chardonnay, which won scores in the 90s from a number of wine critics, is a true find. It comes from Cambria Estate Winery, which is owned by the widow and two daughters of the late wine icon Jess Jackson. A lush and creamy white, it tastes of apple, stone and tropical fruits and ends with a long, refreshing citrusy finish. It’s a bright and beautifully balanced wine that has just a touch of subtle oak. In addition to turkey, it would go well with salmon and cream sauces.
Hahn Family Wines 2018 Pinot Noir, Monterey County, California
Bought • Dierbergs, 7233 Watson Road, in November for $11.49
Description • This versatile pinot noir comes from the family-owned Hahn Estate, which was founded in 1980 by Nicky and Gaby Hahn with the aim of making good quality, everyday wines. Medium-bodied and easy to drink, it tastes of fresh cherries, plums and cranberries with a touch of spice and earthiness. This red has a refreshing acidity that makes you want to take another sip, and it ends with a long silky finish. While relatively high in alcohol at 14.5%, it’s a well-balanced wine that would go with many foods.
