After two weeks of me waxing wistful about Thanksgiving and my 17th anniversary of writing this weekly column, let’s get back to some beer news – and I have a handful of good items
First up is an amazing story that dovetails perfectly with the spirit of the holiday season, where it is hoped we show a little more love and kindness: A customer at a Cleveland restaurant recently left a $3,000 tip on a beer tab of $7.02.
The anonymous tipper did so to help the staff during the pandemic. According to the owner of the eatery, Nighttown, Brendan Ring, the man told him that he wished him well and told him to share the tip with the four employees who were working. Ring wrote on his Facebook: “I ran after him and he said no mistake we will see you when you reopen!”
The restaurant is voluntarily closing for a few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a similar vein, a Toronto bar owner may have seen her venue stay afloat because her beer customers came to rescue by buying almost her entire beer stock and allowing her to survive closing due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Owner Abra Shiner asked her community for help via Facebook, and it responded.
“We were blowing through our savings and I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pay rent towards the end of the month,” Shiner said to CNN. “So, I wrote on Facebook asking people to come buy the beer we had in our stock room ... and it worked. The post went viral.”
Within a matter of days, Shiner had sold more than 90 cases of beer.
“People just started coming out of the woodwork, some people we hadn’t seen in years,” Shiner said.
Here are a couple of local notes of interest:
After extending its season well past it’s usual early-October closing date, the Northampton Brewery deck will be modifying somewhat now. Although the outdoor deck will still remain open for customers (at least in the recently heated sections and until weather makes it impossible), the outdoor bar itself will be closed as the colder weather will cause taps not to work properly. Fear not, though, servers will still bring you your libations (as well as the mandatory food due to COVID-19 rules) from the indoor bar.
I have not gone out much at all during the pandemic, but I have enjoyed a beer or two on the deck a half-dozen times or so. It’s actually quite toasty up there, and they practice great social distancing measures.
Last but not least: Building 8 is releasing a new beer, its Triple IPA, on Dec. 10. You can get it for curbside pickup at the brewery, 320 Riverside Dr. in the Florence section of Northampton. I’m looking forward to this one, as Building 8′s The Double is one of my favorite beers.
