Sioux Falls' newest cele-beer-ty? Local beer named after former city councilor, journalist - Argus Leader

Vernon Brown is willing to sign autographs.

The former Sioux Falls city councilor has his own beer named after him at Look's Beer Co., and the first cans with his picture on it are being sold at Look's Marketplace.

"I've had a lot of friends who think I've 'made it' now that a beer has been named after me," Brown said. "Some even said it'll give Sam Adams a run for his money."

About five years ago, Chad McKinney, a brewer at Look's, was home-brewing a brown ale in his garage, just a few blocks from downtown on Phillips Avenue. As a tribute to his locale, he wanted to name it Downtown Brown.

But his wife, knowing Brown through his position as vice president of marketing and communications at SDN Communications, suggested McKinney call it Downtown Vernon Brown, referencing Brown's nickname working as a journalist for KELO-TV News for 12 years until moving to SDN in 2002.

McKinney brewed the Downtown Vernon Brown with Brown's permission, gifted him a growler and the rest is history.

"I'm not a dark beer person, but it's really good," said Brown, who was a city councilor between 2004 and 2012, and who is a current co-owner of The Spice and Tea Exchange on Phillips Avenue. "It has a powerful, wonderful flavor."

Look's Beer Co. started selling the 5.3% ABV brew last year on tap and started selling the beer in cans this week. As part of the packaging, Look's in-house graphics designer Les Cotton designed a logo with a portrait of Brown.

And the resemblance is there. Brown stopped by earlier this month to take a picture alongside his newest claim to fame.

And soon, you'll have the chance to get your face on a Look's beer, too. Starting in January, for every four-pack of beer someone buys, their name will be put into a drawing to have their photo designed onto a brew can.

The promotion runs through the month of January, and there are four different flavors of the beer, dubbed "15 Minutes," that will be rotated through for winners.

"If a person hates IPA, I would hate to put their face on a beer they don't like," McKinney said.

Downtown Vernon Brown sells at $10 for a four-pack and $5 for a 16 oz can.
