Get your Valentine some Bay Area beer! (And chocolate) - The Mercury News

Valentine’s Day lies just ahead and sure, you could go the heart-shaped candy box route. But here are three less-expected ways to woo your boo.

Oakland beer + chocolate

Oakland’s Federation Brewing has partnered with its neighbor, chocolatier Michael Mischer, for a Valentine themed beer and chocolate pairing kit ($48) that includes a box of 12 chocolates made with Federation Brewing beer and a four-pack of those brews: Purple Midnight Plum Sour, Low Boy Oatmeal Stout, Bomba Nights and Utopia Planitia.

Kits will be available for pick up starting Feb. 10, with delivery ($5 flat fee) available to San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties on Feb. 11. San Francisco Valentines will be delivered on Feb. 10, and California shipped Valentine gifts will arrive on Feb. 10-11 — along with a card that says, “I just want to drink beer and eat chocolates with you.”

Supplies, as you might have guessed, are limited. Find details and place orders at www.federationbrewing.com.

Sonoma cocktail kits

Meanwhile up in Wine Country, Hanson of Sonoma Distillery is doing some special Valentine pairings, including chocolate truffle and vodka pairings ($50) and martini and caviar pairings ($95).

They’re also hosting virtual happy hours, complete with mixology lessons and cocktail kits for making Moscow Mules and more. Along the way, you’ll learn about vodka infusions, distillation, winemaking and how the distillery makes distilled vodka from wine. (Prefer to have them do the cocktail shaking? Hanson  ships batched cocktails — hello, Mandarin Greyhound — too.)

Btw, it’s not just for Valentine’s Day. You can do those spirited happy hours any time. Find the details at https://hansonofsonoma.com.

Palo Alto mixology

Silicon Valley-based CityOfCocktail is offering four special, Valentine-themed mixology workshop on Valentine’s Day featuring three cocktails and 60 minutes worth of interactive fun. Order two weeks ahead ($99) so your materials kit arrives in time, then break out the cocktail shaker and glassware for an hour of bartending fun at 4, 5:15, 6:30 or 7:45 p.m. on the big day. Find details at https://cityofcocktail.com/upcoming-classes.
