FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — When it comes to Valentine’s Day, most people like to celebrate with traditional gifts like champagne and flowers, but why not change it up this year?

“Making beer is the same thing as cooking. It’s making a recipe,” says Joseph Hallock, Co-Owner at Chaos Mountain Brewing.

For almost seven years, Hallock has been putting his skills to the test.

It’s a venture he never saw coming, until one trip across the world changed his life forever.

“My wife and I actually traveled to Germany and Belgium, and made the decision to go ahead and start a production brewery,” says Hallock.

The business is a fan favorite for many people, especially in the Franklin County area.

22 beers are currently on tap, made in-house with fresh and local ingredients.

“We have a doppelbock on right now,” says Hallock. “Our Scotch ale, which we call ‘Squatch’, is our number one seller.”

The brewery is often a place to be for big celebrations like Valentine’s Day, hosting events like beer dinners.

But due to the coronavirus pandemic, changes needed to be made.

“This year, because of the COVID, we decided to keep it simple and just do dessert-beer pairing,” says Hallock.

Now, a new opportunity. A chance to try four different beers, all paired with chocolate creations ranging from truffles, marshmallows, and rugelachs.

“The ‘Agents of Chaos’, for example, [has] got a lot of caramel, dark fruit like plum and fig, and raisin flavors to it. So you want to mix that with something that has a similar flavor profile,” says Hallock.

With award-winning beers and loyal customers by his side, Hallock says it’s a passion unlike any other.

“As long as the weather’s good, come on out,” says Hallock. ‘We’ll be here.”

Chaos Mountain Brewing is located at 3135 Dillons Mill Rd. in Callaway. The business is open Wednesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

If interested in attending the event, you are asked to make a reservation in advance due to limited supplies.
