American sparkling wine has grown from a small group of producers into a kinetic exciting industry. Each year brings more winemakers willing to take on the challenges of crafting sparkling wine the exact same way they make it in Champagne (known as Méthode Champenoise). The American sparkling pioneers (Mumm, Schramsburg, Roederer, Domaine Carneros, Domaine Chandon, Argyle, and Gloria Ferrer to name a few) continue to craft exceptional examples of sparkling wine. But, there are many more made-in-America sparklings out there to try, below is a list to get you started.

Cuvaison Brut Rosé, 2017: Winemaker Steve Rogstad made the winery’s first vintage of Brut Rosé as an experiment in 2012, and it was such a success that the Cuvaison team added it to the winery’s full-time roster. Made from 100% estate grown Carneros fruit, this sparkling is a beautifully balanced wine with pretty notes of ripe apple, citrus cream, ginger and buttery biscuit. The cooler climate growing conditions ensure the wine stays fresh and zesty. An American classic. $50

MacRostie Sonoma Coast Brut Method Champenoise, 2017: Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen used Chardonnay from the famed Sangiacamo Vineyard and Pinot Noir from another cool climate site—Thale’s Estate Vineyard. The result is a sparkling with a rich mousse-like mouthfeel, very layered and complex with zesty citrus and ripe pear flavors. Really delicious. $40

Gruet Brut Rose: In 1984 French native Laurent Gruet took a chance on winemaking in New Mexico and in 1987 his son produced their first Brut expression. Today, this is still one the best values in American sparkling wine—it’s elegant, fresh and bright with sunny strawberry fruit and creamy citrus notes. $17.99

MORE FOR YOU

Laetitia Brut Coquard, 2017: This winery was originally started (in the 1980’s) by French Champagne house Deutz. The family shipped over two Coquard basket presses to make sure production was just like it was at home –and the presses are still at the winery today. This cuvee is made of 80/20 Pinot Noir/Chardonnay—a bit richer style softer mouthfeel and good acidity with hints of toast and light strawberry. $44

Sea Smoke Sea Spray, 2015: Grapes harvested from the cooler climate sites in Santa Rita Hills get the star treatment with 12 months of sur lie aging in barrel and an additional 36 months of aging en tirage (or in the bottle). The palate sings with ripe berries, warm toasty bread notes, pearly effervescence and a marvelous mineral core. $80

J Vineyards Brut Cuvée Extra Brut: This expression is J Vineyards’ driest with very little residual sugar. The nose shows pretty toasted almond and biscuit notes along with ripe pear, ginger and citrus. They suggest pairing it with Dungeness crab or crudo yellowtail topped with ginger, lime and avocado—sounds like a perfect beginning to your Valentine’s Day date night. $50

Riverbench Pinot Meunier 2017: Riverbench is the first winery to cultivate Pinot Meunier (which is a traditional grape in Champagne) for sparkling wine in Santa Barbara County. They went whole hog and bottled a 100% Pinot Meunier—which resulted in a bubbly that shows creamy lemon and citrus, a bit of black cherry and a hint of toasted rye. Wonderful mouthfeel and richness $68
