CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A letter signed by the entire staff of the Platform Beer Co.’s taproom in Columbus is circulating on social media, accusing the business of allowing unsafe working conditions during the coronavirus pandemic.
A hand-written note says, “The entire Platform Columbus crew has quit. The taproom is closed until further notice. Thank you!”
A two-page letter addressed to brewery co-founder Justin Carson reads: “Over the last year, Platform has let us down.”
The letter lists a litany of issues regarding hours employees work, including double-duty for some. It also says the food-storage cooler has “uncontrollable black mold.” The employees also said that the company requires some end-of-shift closings by single workers, which they view as unsafe.
It also accused the company of withholding notifications of at least one case of COVID-19.
“We believe it is unethical and unrealistic to expect employees to continue taking on more hours and more responsibilities for the same low wages, all while spending copious amounts of money expanding the brand during a time of crisis when we are barely getting by,” the letter says.
“For the reasons listed above and others, we have all resigned. The taproom is closed and locked.”
It is signed “Regards, The entire Columbus Taproom Staff.”
A call to the Columbus taproom went unanswered Saturday. Its website still lists the location as open, as of 6 p.m. Texts to Carson and a marketing representative for Platform were not immediately returned.
Since opening in 2014, the Cleveland-based brewery has grown and received honors at the Great American Beer Festival.
The Columbus brewery opened the 12,000 square-foot Columbus taproom east of Nationwide Arena.
Anheuser-Busch InBev bought the brewery in 2019 to add to its craft-brewery division.
Its initial location is on Lorain Road in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood. It also has a production brewery on Vega Avenue and Phunkenship – a brewery and taproom dedicated to sour ales – on Sackett Avenue. After the Columbus taproom opened, it expanded with a location in Cincinnati.
