Though the scientific evidence that red wine is good for your heart remains weak, there is a strong argument that Athens Wine Weekend can strengthen your brain.

The annual event will take place on May 21-23 at the Classic Center, where guests will have the opportunity to sample a list of over 200 wines, taste unique food pairings, and attend seminars by local experts.

Overseeing the food and wine pairings for this year's festival are Frank Sinkwich III, president of Northeast Sales Distributing, Inc., and Eagle Rock Distributing Company account manager Shawn Butcher.

The weekend's offerings will also include seminars by Athens-based authorities Alejandro Ortiz of Normal School of Wine and Conner and Jessica Bush of Sommify.

"In addition to bringing in winemakers when we can, we also try to focus on wines you might not go out and buy yourself," Sinkwich told the Banner-Herald. "It's an educational experience as well."

As the only wine festival in town, Athens Wine Weekend pulls out all the stops, beginning with an amuse-bouche on Friday featuring bite-sized selections prepared by chefs from Butcher & Vine and George's Lowcountry Table. Saturday is reserved for the "Grand Tasting," split up into morning and afternoon sessions with capacity caps to keep the events within a safe limit.

With over 200 different wines available from distributors and local wineries, attendees are encouraged to receive guidance from educational seminars like Sommify's guide to "blind tasting," scheduled to coincide with Saturday's main event in the venue's main ballroom.

"With our seminar, you might try a grape you’ve never heard of or leave having learned something new about wine," said Sommify co-creator Jessica Bush. "We want to give people confidence when ordering a glass of wine out at a restaurant or at a wine shop."

Sinkwich, who is a certified sommelier, works with the Classic Center Cultural Foundation to present themes and ideas informed by his knowledge of current trends in the wine world. This year, Sinkwich was inspired by French food to create unique pairings that weren't tethered to one specific region of the country.

"The first course appetizer is going to be a smoked duck with steel cut grit and luxardo cherry cake with sweet pepper relish," said Sinkwich. "That'll be paired with a Cahors, a southwestern French red wine from Malbec."

Athens Wine Weekend concludes with a Sunday morning brunch that will include sparkling wine, mimosas, and a buffet.
