Belt’s Beer Garden: Takin’ it Aussie - Hustle Belt

The beginnings of Turning Point Beer began some six years ago, and started under the name 6 seconds Brewing. But, after a name change and a bunch of hard work, the brewery was finally able to open their doors in March of 2018 in Bedford, Texas - a suburb right in between Dallas and Fort Worth, and just north of Arlington.

It’s difficult to find their beers outside of the Lone Star State but I was able to snag a can of their Australian Kiss - an all-Australian hopped Double IPA.

Australian Kiss was brewed with generous amounts of Ella, Galaxy, and Vic Secret hops from “down undah” and features a very solid 8.7% ABV. It was released on April 2nd and this review was written on May 20th.

This DIPA poured an insanely murky orange-y straw color with two fingers of airy head topping the beer. The large off-white bubbles slowly fizzled down to a small accumulation around the edge of the glass with a thin layer still laying across the middle.

The aroma was packed with dank hop notes. It was mostly juicy tropical fruits - orange/tangerine, pineapple, and guava - but there were some floral and grassy notes as well. There was also just the slightest touch of spice as well.

It was a very light and crushable beer from the first sip. The body was thinner and more watery than I was expecting it to be which meant each swig went down way too easily.

The first burst of flavor featured notes of pineapple, orange, and a little bit of grapefruit rind. It was a tad sweet and quite juicy. However, from there the citrus peel notes would begin to grab hold and take over my taste buds.

When that pithy characteristic began to expand, the hops also began to switch gears - the fruit fading and the more earthy notes rising up.

There were some floral notes but, mostly, it was a small black pepper spice, some pine, and some slick and resinous grassy notes that appeared.

From there, the beer began to fade out. As it did so a slightly bitter, slightly sticky aftertaste was left on my tongue. It was a combination of citrus rind and grassy resin that held on for a few moments after everything else had vanished.

But, with the beer being more on the watery and light side of DIPAs, it wasn’t hard to grab another sip immediately and wash away that aftertaste. That, in part, is why I was able to pound back this beer in under a half hour. Plus the 8.7% ABV was entirely hidden!

Australian Kiss was a very crushable Double IPA. A little dry and sticky to end things but had a nice mix of hoppy flavors and was very sessionable for the higher alcohol content.
