PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, is joining with Koi Zen Cellars for a virtual wine tasting fundraiser.

The online event will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 30 via Zoom. Patrons can experience Koi Zen Cellars’ wines, chocolates, breadsticks and crackers, as well as share tasting notes, said Lynn Wolsey, PowPAC’s publicist. Darius Miller, Koi Zen sommelier, will lead the 60-minute event.

Two sampler kits are available for the event. They are $40 for one kit or $70 for two in the same household using the same device for Zoom. One sampler kit contains five 2-ounce bottles of a variety of Koi Zen Cellars wines, a chocolate and a package of breadsticks or crackers. Ticket price is included in the kit. PowPAC will receive a percentage of the kit sale price, said Gail Matson, PowPAC’s theater management team member. Purchase one kit at tinyurl.com/PowPAC1Kit or two kits at tinyurl.com/PowPAC2Kits.

For a week after the event, bottles of wine purchased from Koi Zen Cellars will provide PowPAC with 20 percent of the sale proceeds, Matson said. A code for the purchase will be sent following the event.

Guests can pick up their kits in advance of the event at Koi Zen Cellars, 12225 World Trade Drive, Suite P, in Carmel Mountain Ranch, Wolsey said. Pick-up days are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 26; 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 27; 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 28 and Saturday, May 29; plus no later than 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 30. The Zoom link to the event will be mailed to guests on Saturday, May 29.

Funds raised from the virtual event will help PowPAC pay its fixed expenses, including rent, utilities and insurance, while the theater remains closed due to COVID-19, Wolsey said. “Kits sold for the virtual wine tasting with Koi Zen will enable PowPAC to weather these trying times when so many small businesses and arts organizations are struggling to make ends meet,” she said. “Your purchase will help ensure that quality live theater will be available in our region for years to come.”

Wolsey said the theater is working toward a July reopening with a new season. Reopening safety protocols are being put in place and rights for the new season of plays are being secured. “We’re very excited,” she said. “It’s been a long, very tough year. It’s not just been us, but the entire entertainment industry. It’s been horrendous, not knowing if we’d ever be able to reopen again.”
