A Siesta beer, a Golden Gate Bridge-inspired brew and more news - The Mercury News

Things are heating up with summer on the horizon. Clearly, it’s time for a cool, refreshing beer — and there are plenty of good ones headed for taps and store shelves. The state’s return to at least quasi-normalcy means beer festivals may be coming back soon, and breweries are ramping up their new offerings, from a red ale inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge to an actual siesta-inducing brew. (Yes, really.) Here’s what’s new in the craft beer world.

Remote drinks: An interesting new development at the intersection of beer and technology is a
new app dubbed GYDO — Get Your Drink On — that lets you buy a friend a drink anywhere in the world, as long as the bar or restaurant accepts Apple or Google Pay. Buying a round of drinks remotely seems like a perfect idea for these strange times. Find details at gydo.app.

San Francisco’s Fort Point Beer Co.has just released a double red IPA called Rivet. (Fort Point Beer Co.)

New sips: San Francisco’s Fort Point Beer Co. has just released the second in its new series of experimental and one-off beers, a double red IPA dubbed Rivet that’s brewed with Chinook, Amarillo and Mosaic hop varieties. It’s red in color, with aromas of pine and citrus and some caramel notes from the roasted barley among the malt build. (And the promo shots with Golden Gate Bridge rivets make the inspiration clear.) Rivet is available for a limited time in 16-ounce cans.

A collaboration between San Diego’s AleSmith Brewing and Monterey’s Alvarado Street Brewery has delivered a new West Coast-style IPA inspired by Aussie and New Zealand hops. It’s called
Oso Under, and it uses generous amounts of Australian and New Zealand hop varieties, including Galaxy, Vic Secret and Nelson hops. The beer is available now in 4-pack cans.

This one isn’t so much new as a reappearance: It’s been some time since Sierra Nevada Brewing last made its spring seasonal, Pale Bock. Now, the brew has made a comeback. It’s available via the brewery’s web store at sierranevada.com.

Naptime: And a new beer from Mexico, billed as the “world’s first non-narcotic sleep-inducing brew” and dubbed Siesta Beer, is headed for California beer shops soon thanks to a Beverly Hills importer. Siesta contains a shot of L-Theanine, an amino acid that the company claims “can promote an alert state of relaxation without drowsiness while improving learning performance, heightening mental acuity, promoting concentration, reducing the negative side effects of alcohol (hangover) and can aid in dozing off into a deep non-REM sleep.” It may bring a whole new meaning to the term “nightcap.” Find details at siestabeer.yolasite.com.
