BRAINTREE— A beer garden for the "5K to Braintree Day" road race has been approved by the town's license board.

The beer garden will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 19, when runners and walkers will be picking up their bibs for the race, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 20, the day of the race, on French's Common next to town hall.

The race and the beer garden are fundraisers for the Braintree July 4th Celebration Committee, which runs the annual "Braintree Day" events on June 26.

Sean Powers, who chairs the committee, said it makes sense to add the second day to the beer garden, since  they would be set up for the race the next day.  This is the second year for the race.

The vote to approve two, one-day liquor licenses for the event was 2-1, with Town Clerk James Casey and Building Inspector Russell Forsberg in favor and Director of Municipal Licenses and Inspections Mary Beth McGrath opposed.  Police Chief Mark Dubois and Fire Chief James O'Brien did not attend the meeting.

The 5K to Braintree Day starts at 10 a.m,. June 20 at Braintree Town Hall, 1 John F. Kennedy Memorial Drive.  A .9 mile kids' race begins at 9:15 a.m.The registration is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the kid's race.  The first 400 entrants will receive T-shirts and all participants can attend a post race cookout.  to register for the race, go to runsignup.com.
