Tanya and Mark Unruh had around five events canceled when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down events in 2020.

The Unruhs are having better luck in 2021, and they excitedly partook in Tap That Topeka.

“This is our thing,” said Tanya, a Manhattan resident. “(We are) super excited.”

They duo had tickets to beer fests last year, but all were canceled. They had no preference in drinks and wanted to try “whatever they have.”

Tap That Topeka welcomed about 70 breweries and more than 300 beers to the 800 and 900 block of S.W. Jackson Street on Saturday afternoon.

Adam Rosdahl, one of the owners of Norseman Brewing Co., said the last festival the brewery attended was the Craft Beer Expo in Lawrence in March 2020, and he was excited to see events returning.

Rosdahl was also excited to see how people would like Helles, a new drink being offered for the first time at the event.

“We just tapped it at the brewery yesterday, so this is a lot of people’s first chance to give it a shot,” he said.

Stephanie Litfin, a Topeka resident, was one of the first people to try Helles. She gave it a good review.

Liftin said the past year without social events has been difficult, but she has a renewed sense of optimism now.

Mason Pruett, a Lawrence resident, made it his goal to sample something from every booth. He came prepared by wearing a necklace that had such snacksas Oreos and pretzels attached to it. He got the idea from seeing others with similar necklaces at past events.

Joseph Roberson, a Topeka resident, also had a food necklace containing pretzels and white cheddar Cheez-Its.

“You gotta have snacks,” Roberson said. “You get out here and drink for four hours you got to have something to eat while you’re here.”

Roberson’s first drink was from Wilcott Brewing Co., an area brewery in Holton. Roberson was happy to see breweries in that area.

Tap That started at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Bubbly feelings of excitement were joined with bubbling brews as the event offered everything from seltzers to IPAs.

“It’s a great experience,” Roberson said. “We have been every other year except last year when it was canceled, so it was nice being able to actually come back and do this again.”
