New Taylorsville liquor store will sell cold beer — a first for Utah - Salt Lake Tribune

The drought is over for Utah — at least when it comes to purchasing cold beer in liquor stores.

On June 8 at 11 a.m., the first state-run store to offer refrigerated beer will open in Taylorsville, said Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control Executive Director Tiffany Clason in a news release.

“The DABC is making strides to improve patron experiences by listening to how we can better run our stores, said Clason, who took over the agency in January. “The new features in the Taylorsville store are a step in that direction, where we are following through on what shoppers say they want in state liquor stores — cold beer.”

Utah’s policy of selling warm beer has been the number one complaint of liquor store customers for years, according to numerous surveys.

Clason said revenue from the newly constructed Taylorsville store, at 4455 S. 2700 West, is anticipated to generate $1.7 million for the state and city in its first year of operation.

While this will be the first time a state-run liquor store sells refrigerated beer, Utah consumers can get cold brews at local breweries and a few contract stores — officially called package agencies — located in hotels, resorts and rural areas of the state.

Under state laws, Utah liquor stores must sell beer that has more than 5% alcohol by volume. Lower-alcohol beer is sold in grocery stores.
