Beer fans look forward to the annual leak of beer labels which provides drinkers a sneak peek at brews that may be released later this year (including potential entries from Goose Island Beer’s hotly anticipated Bourbon County line).
The list is furnished by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, as beer makers are required to get federal approval on alcohol labels, and has become a go-to resource for anxious aficionados trying to suss out forthcoming offerings. Breweries know this and sometimes misdirect fans by putting out fictitious labels.
The new round of labels lists a Bourbon County Brand Proprietor’s Stout with strawberry, and coconut. While Goose distributes other Bourbon County beers across the country, Prop is exclusively sold in the Chicago area. Drinkers should keep in mind, however, that Goose Island in particular has a history of misdirection while pushing out labels for fictional beers.
Other noteworthy possibilities include key lime pie ale collaboration among Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits and Pipeworks Brewing. Chicago’s popular butcher shop Paulina Market is working with Temperance Beer Co. in suburban Evanston on a beer. There’s also five new submissions from Maplewood Brewery and Distillery in Logan Square. Peruse the full rundown on industry blog Guys Drinking Beer.
This is just the first round of labels; stay tuned for more.

— An early Saturday shooting killed one person and wounded nine others along the restaurant-laden 75th Street business corridor between Park Manor and Chatham, according to the Sun-Times and other news reports. The corridor is home to a number of lauded restaurants including Lem’s Bar-B-Q, Original Soul Vegetarian, and Brown Sugar Bakery. The violence shook nearby business operators and patrons who told reporters that the area is usually peaceful. It also left some wondering whether the city would provide the same investment in safety as that seen downtown; garbage trucks blocked off highway ramps last year with helicopters buzzing over ahead after restaurants owners in River North and the Loop questioned the city’s preparedness.
— Chicago officials on Monday shared details around major city food events under the umbrella of the “Open Chicago” recovery plan, including specifics around Taste of Chicago To-Go (July 7 to 11) and a return of the historic Maxwell Street Market (first and third Sundays of the month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). This year’s Taste will feature nearly 40 participating restaurants with pop-up events at spots including the Pullman City Market, Austin Town Hall City Market, the Hatchery, and more. More information is available on the Taste of Chicago To-Go and Chicago City Markets websites.
— The Canadian parent company behind board game cafe chain Snakes & Lattes has named chef Aaron McKay (Schwa) its new chief operating officer — a promotion from his prior position as the brand’s vice president of food and beverage. Snakes & Lattes held on to McKay after in September 2020 it purchased Cards Against Humanity’s Chicago Board Game Cafe.
