Coca-Cola is launching coffee-flavored soda in US - Business Insider - Business Insider

sela.indah.link
  • Coke is debuting a coffee-cola hybrid called Coca-Cola with Coffee in the US, with the drink hitting shelves in January 2021.
  • The drink has roughly twice the caffeine as classic Coke and half the calories.
  • As people's daily routines are disrupted by the pandemic, Coca-Cola executives see a chance for people to turn to Coca-Cola with Coffee for their daily caffeine fix.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Coca-Cola is bringing Coke with Coffee to the US just as Americans' daily coffee routines are scrambled by the coronavirus pandemic.

The beverage — which is already available internationally — will hit shelves in the US in January 2021. Coca-Cola with Coffee will be available to the company's subscription service, called the Coca-Cola Insiders Club, this week.

"We think of this as a hybrid category," Jaideep Kibe, the vice president for the Coca-Cola trademark in North America, told Business Insider. "We've got an opportunity to create almost a new sub-category called refreshment coffee."

A 12 ounce can of Coca-Cola with Coffee has 69 mg of caffeine, versus classic Coke's 34 mg, and 70 calories, half of Coke's 140 calories. The classic Coca-Cola with Coffee Dark Blend's flavor is similar to that of the classic cola, but the aftertaste is closer to sweet coffee. The company will also sell Coffee Vanilla and Coffee Caramel flavors.

Coca-Cola with Coffee launched in 25 countries last year, including Australia, Spain, and Thailand. While the beverage's entrance into the American market has been a long time coming, the pandemic has helped highlight when and why people might find themselves reaching for a Coca-Cola with Coffee.

"As people have been in lockdown or ... working from home, there's a real opportunity to get that boost, that little pick-me-up, whether it's the slump in the afternoon or mid morning," Kibe said. With the loss of office rituals such as gathering around the coffee machine, he said, people can instead reach for a can of Coca-Cola with Coffee.

Coca-Cola's attempt to meld the coffee and the cola market can be seen in some ways as the beverage giant attempting to regain lost ground. RBC analyst Nik Modi has theorized that Starbucks took a slice of business away from Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, as people began to swap soda for coffee when seeking out a caffeine boost.

"Twenty years ago, people used to wake up with a Diet Coke or a Diet Pepsi," Modi said at Beverage Digest's 2016 Future Smarts conference. "At around 2 o'clock, they'd have another and take a break. Walk in front of a Starbucks at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. and tell me how long the lines are."

Kibe refrained from naming any direct competitors, instead saying he expected Coca-Cola with Coffee to grow sales by attracting a range of consumers. But, the pandemic has already forced people to change up their daily Starbucks' routines. Starbucks said this week that its morning business has slumped as people are no longer commuting, with a rush of customers now coming at around 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Coca-Cola has already found success in expanding trademark Coca-Cola, with new flavors and the launch of Coca-Cola Energy in January. Coca-Cola has doubled down on its successful brands during the pandemic, while killing off less successful lines, with CEO James Quincey saying that the company's "goal was to ruthlessly prioritize" core brands to strengthen the supply chain.

Barkada Wine Bar Will Change Its Name After Drawing Criticism for Appropriation - Eater DC

sela.indah.link

After receiving a flurry of criticism online for using a word from the Tagalog language native to the Philippines as the name for their new wine bar off U Street NW, the four white male owners of Barkada have promised to find a new name.

Preview coverage from Washington City Paper earlier this month and Eater DC yesterday drew attention to the bar, which does not serve Filipino food or drinks but attempted to adopt the name “Barkada” because it signifies a tight-knit group of friends. The owners said they felt that described their own friend group as well as the type of community they hoped to build at the bar. But less than 24 hours after Eater published a story Wednesday that included a cursory explanation of the name, partners Sebastian Zutant, Nick Guglietta, Nate Fisher, and Anthony Aligo agreed to heed the calls of commenters flooding the bar’s Instagram page asking to change the name.

One Facebook commenter listed as Dorothy Garcia responded to a link sharing Eater’s story by writing, “Your barkada would actually save you from making a big, honking, culturally appropriating faux pas. Like choosing a name from a language, people, and culture that you have absolutely no connection to. And featuring wines from said country’s colonizer, but not food or drinks from the country itself. Your barkada would expect you to do better than that.” Another commenter, listed as Ernest Jay Mandario Apaga, wrote, “Four white guys using a filipino word to name your bar is the 1990’s spiritual equivalent to getting tattoos of chinese symbols on your triceps ... this isn’t the kind of representation anyone was looking for but thanks for the appropriation!”

Guglietta confirmed to Eater that the group has committed to making a change shortly after he and his partners signed their name to apologetic statements, posted on the bar’s website and Instagram, that said they “missed the mark” and are “actively looking to change our identity and brand and engage in further dialogue with each of you.” The statement includes a pledge to donate proceeds from the opening to the Filipino community. Guglietta says the owners have already made plans to meet with members of the community for an “open dialogue.”

Zutant, a well-established sommelier in D.C. who owns Primrose in Brookland, attracted buzz to the new bar. He had curated a list of offbeat natural wines that included labels from Spain, which ruled the Philippines as a colony for more than 300 years. The bar also planned to sell trendy tinned fish, smoked salmon from Ivy City Smokehouse, and charcuterie from Stachowski Market in Georgetown.

“I pushed for the idea that it didn’t matter if our name was in a different language or not,” Zutant told WCP in an early July article. “I didn’t want to call it posse or homies or clique.”

The owners do not plan to rush into finding a new name for the restaurant. Guglietta says that they haven’t decided what to call the restaurant in the interim, but the easiest option would be to “remove branding and operate nameless.” He says the process “is not going to be turned around in 24 hours, because “there’s a lot of steps to take in changing a name.”

“Part of the reason we did this is not because it’s our identity but we resonated with the meaning and thought behind the word,” Guglietta says. “But it was a mistake.”

Guglietta says the owners spent five months coming up with the name. He says in the course of considering Barkada, they received positive feedback from a few friends with Filipino heritage, but the owners recognize they should have done more to evaluate the decision.

Here’s the full statement on the restaurant’s website:

We ‘re changing the name. We reached out to many people in the community to find a name that embodied a sense of friendship and bond between people. When we ventured outside of our own language to capture that sentiment, we missed the mark. We apologize to all we offended, and to our community we hope to serve. It was never our intention to appropriate or capitalize on the Filipino culture and we recognize we fell short in engaging more of the Filipino community. Our goal is to be a gathering place for friends in the neighborhood, and to become friends with those neighbors. We still hope to carry through the ideals of friendship, starting with our ability to listen. We are actively looking to change our identity and brand and engage in further dialogue with each of you. We look forward to hearing more of your thoughts, and how we can better capture the ideals with which we started this project. We will be donating proceeds from our opening to support the Filipino community as well. Barkada is a beautiful word with a deep meaning of friendship. We want to honor that, and you, as we move forward. We hope to hear from you at BarkadaWineBar@gmail.com

Sincerely,

Anthony, Nick, Nate, & Sebastian

Wines Positioned At $20 And Up Propel Growth In Retail Channels

July 30, 2020

For the first time since before Covid-19, four-week table wine sales in IRI channels slowed to single-digit volume growth (+8%) for the period ending July 12. Year-to-date table wine volumes still showed impressive gains, amounting to 7.7 million 9-liter cases, up 11.5%. Sparkling brands significantly outperformed table wine, with 26% growth the past four weeks in IRI channels, and were up 23% year-to-date, thanks primarily to La Marca and other Prosecco brands. Overall, imported labels (+18% year-to-date) outpaced domestic wine (+12%) over the four-week period.

Among table wines, Gallo’s Barefoot continues to lead in IRI channels by both volume and value, but the fastest-growing labels year-to-date were Delicato’s Bota Box (+57% in dollar terms) and Deutsch’s Josh Cellars (+46%). Bottled table wine priced at least $20 per 750-ml. was the fastest-growing segment (+28% year-to-date), followed by brands priced between $12 and $20 (+21%), while labels priced below $8 grew less than 6% in dollar terms. Premium boxed wines (+30% year-to-date) outperformed value boxed brands (+12%) in IRI channels for the period ending July 12.—Juan Banaag

Beacon Hill Soft Serve Ice Cream Shop Milk Drunk Opens - Eater Seattle

sela.indah.link

As the summer heats up, a new ice cream shop in Beacon Hill looks to provide some much-needed chill. Milk Drunk — the anticipated restaurant from the husband-and-wife team behind the acclaimed Homer — is now open, with plenty of soft serve options on the menu, along with some fried chicken.

Those familiar with Homer’s massively popular soft serve walk-up window should be familiar with some of Cox’s inventive flavors. On the menu to start are vanilla with malted chocolate, fig-leaf coconut with Rainier cherry, and buttermilk lavender with black plum-orange blossom, all available as a swirl. There’s also hard dips and a selection of toppings (including cocoa nibs, M&Ms, and pretzels), for extra decadence.

On the savory side, Milk Drunk features a variety of brined and double-fried chicken sandwiches, such as Virginia Boy (with country ham and hot honey) and Coastal Cluck (with pineapple slaw and jerk mayo). Vegetarians can opt for a portobello mushroom version.

Chef Logan Cox and Sara Knowles named the place as an homage to their young daughter, and the brightly-colored spot promises to be family friendly — though there are some adult beverages as well in the form of frozen cocktails. And everything is available to-go, with online preordering coming soon.

The Milk Drunk debut should be a bright spot for the Homer folks, since last week the farm-to-table restaurant announced on Instagram that it was closing temporarily after someone an employee came in contact with tested positive for COVID-19. The staff underwent tests as precautions, and Homer is planning to reopen Friday for takeout and limited patio dining, just in time to join its new sibling.

Borden Dairy donates thousands of milk gallons to families in need during COVID-19 pandemic - WKRN News 2

sela.indah.link

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Borden Dairy handed out four thousand gallons of milk in Davidson County on Thursday.

It’s part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s “Farmers to Families Food Box” program, which provides fresh milk, produce, and meat to families that are financially struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As people arrived at the pick-up site at Woodmont Hills Church of Christ, volunteers from The Dairy Alliance, UT Extension, and the Tennessee 4-H Foundation placed milk directly into the trunks and backseats of cars to avoid person-to-person contact.

Denise Jones with The Dairy Alliance says the milk is completely free to anyone who needs it. It does not matter what city or county you live in.

“They’re very surprised, very thankful. When we encourage them to take some for other people they’re very gracious and just can’t believe that there’s free milk available for people in this time of need,” said Jones.

If you missed Thursday’s giveaway you can still get free milk on Friday, July 31.

Volunteers will be handing out another 4,000 gallons at the Rutherford County Extension Office (315 John R. Rice Blvd Murfreesboro, TN) from 10 am to 1 pm, or until supplies run out.
