Budweiser declares itself the official beer of 'Up North' - WISN Milwaukee

Budweiser is seemingly taking aim at Wisconsin's brewing heritage. The Missouri brewer is calling itself the official beer of "Up North." The beermaker is creating a pop-up supper club in Catalano Square in the Third Ward on Thursday and Friday, offering a free Bud-Battered Fish Fry paired with a cold Bud in the heart of Miller and Leinenkugel's country."We wanted to bring that up north supper club experience down to the city," Budweiser senior brand director Krystyn Stowe said. Stowe, an Elm Grove native no less, insists the free beer and fish fry is not a swipe at Miller."With the beer traditions here, is this Budweiser in any way sort of throwing down the gauntlet with Miller, Leinenkugel's, that kind of tradition?" WISN 12 News reporter Nick Bohr said."Absolutely not, there's nothing more fun than a little friendly competition. This is by no means trying to stir the pot, but rather Wisconsinites love beer, and we wanted to give them more beer and more opportunity and choice," Stowe said. The only-in-Milwaukee pop-up supper club is coupled with an vacation contest — a real push for more than a sip of the Wisconsin beer market. This summer vacation not only includes a stay in a traditional "Up North" home, but the winner also get the complete "Up North" experience, including one of many different traditional "Up North" activities such as water rafting, kayaking, zip-lining and a fridge fully stocked with Budweiser. To enter, post your favorite Up North photo and explain where Up North really starts using #TakeMeUpNorth. "Budweiser isn't necessarily one of those brands that we really align with our local identity here, so I think what this campaign is trying to do is change that," University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee marketing professor Katharine Du said.Du said it may not work."Given the strong brewing tradition here, it's possible this campaign could be met with a really healthy dose of skepticism in our area," Du said.WISN 12 News contacted Miller and Leinie's owner Molson Coors for a comment but did not hear back. The supper club will be open from until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
